I knew a railfan boilerworker who lived in Frazier Park, up on The Grapevine. He worked in Bakersfield area refineries when they had jobs for him, ( 2 hour roundtrip from home ) or else he had to drive 4 hours roundtrip ( this was in the 1980's. ) to El Segundo - EVERY DAMN DAY. He owned a VW Rabbit DIESEL, for the good fuel mileage. I guess the benefits were worth the time away from home.
