I was watching a YouTube vid about China HSR last night (LINK). It gave this cost info on high speed rail construction:

Cost per kilometer
USA: $56 Million
Europe: $25-$39 Million
China: $17 Million

Hey, we are #1. Chant with me... "USA! USA!" The number is interesting considering that a lot of the Chinese rail is on massive elevated structures.
