It was actually born as ATSF 1939, became 5939 in the 1969/1970 general renumbering, and then 5989 when remanufactured in 1983. Santa Fe sold the unit along with a flock of other F45's and SD45's to Morrison Knudsen in April 1994 and leased it back. The lease ended in late 1999 or early 2000, and what was by then Boise Locomotive Works/MPI cut up most of the units but kept 5989 around as an engine test bed. The unit donated its pilot to the restoration of FP45 108 at the Southern California Railway Museum a few years back.
Other than the 5989, three other former Santa Fe F45's may still exist. The shell of ex-ATSF 5960 is now luxury lodgings at the Izaac Walton Inn in Essex, MT, masquerading as "Great Northern 441," and the rusty remains of Wisconsin Central 6654 and 6655 (ex-ATSF 5965 and 5972) still show up in aerial views of Larry's Truck Electric in McDonald, OH:
