I wonder if rubber tire manufacturers might be implicated in Brasil's monorailmania. Michelin lobbyists have been blamed for the postwar elimination of most French street railways.
Alternately Germany saved most of their trams and had a strong steel industry, particularly in Nordrein-Westfalen.
Sao Paulo's "monotrilho" did have tire troubles recently. I dunno if it is driverless. SP has been experiencing driver strikes and consequent traffic jams.
