Red lights on CN units

On most newer CN units there are one or two red lights either mounted near the ditch light, or up on the carbody almost like a classification light. I thought they might be used in DPU as a rear end marker rather than a dim headlight, but recently I saw a BNSF grain train with a CN DPU on the rear and the red light was not on. Am I correct in regard to what those red lights are for?
