Last Sacramento Northern from Oakland

Tomorrow will be the fifty year anniversery of the last Sacramento Northern electric freight train to be operated between Oakland and Walnut Creek,CA. On Febuary 28, 1957 the SN extra 652 east, with helper engine SN 653 and 9 cars departed the 40th and Shafter yard for the last time. The train stalled on the grade out of Oakland and had to double hill between Rockridge and Temescal siding, with the engine 652 taking the first 4 cars up to Temescal. Then the SN 652 along with 653 both bought remaining 5 cars up to Temescal. The 653 was pusher locomotive cut in behind the caboose. Today SN 652 is on display at the Western Railway Museum at Rio Vista, CA. The SN 653 is on display at the Orange Empire Museum in Perris, California.
