Descending, but no brake shoe smoke?

"An unusually heavy beet train, weighing 9,629 tons, descended Cuesta on April 26, 1987.
The train required the placement of a four-unit mid-train helper 43 cars deep, followed
by 31 cars and a second four-unit mid-train helper, with 25 cars and a caboose at the rear."
