Here's an ineresting video, by MTA, of the current options for the West Santa Ana branch LERT project, via the UP Harbor line, former PE Whittier branch, the original PE four track main on Long Beach Avenue (shared segment with the former Blueline, and then into downtown LA, via Alameda....
The shared use of the PE four track segment was one of my last recommendations to bring the project down on budget to a former client looking at this, for the local Council of Governments, as all of the other earlier routes, jogging over rail lines, and on elevated or subway structures via the industrial zones, were an extra billion or two to build. So, this is now the preferred option, which can get the project built by the Olympics.
And, this route would lead to a potential completion of the downtown LA LRT "circle"...
Going out 8th Street from Alameda, west to the 7th and Figueroa Metro station, and terminating, is one option, in Downtown LA (underground, or at surface???) will be a costly choice. But, the other LA downtown option is going up Alameda, Which completes a downtown LRT "circle", and gives it direct access just past Chinatown to the Metro yards at the Old Bull Ring/Midway yard, on the old Gold Liine by continuing up Spring Street (via the original 1876 SP mainline route).

Now, if I could only convince my old client that it would be best to go up Alameda, and add an additional stop at the old River Station... for a link with the Chinatown station, for things like concerts and events in the Bullring State Park....
What is also of interest to note, in this very good "flyover", is the many sidings and industries that were once rail served even as late as the 90's that no longer have spurs, and the huge amount of heavy rail served industry that was once located in places like South Gate that is "no more".....
