Free Transit - Not a New Idea

In roughly 1958-1959, I was riding home on a late-night San Jose City Lines bus. No one else on it, I chatted a bit with the driver.

He commented that "some day," transit bus rides would be a municipally-provided free service, like street lights, road maintenance, and so forth.

This was long before public-owned transit systems, but also long before the (obvious) homelessness issues, transit violence, etc.
