Good luck on that... I'd love to take it, and folks did use it.... The dismantling of the Desert Wind and the Portland trains never made sense, as they contributed a lot of connecting passenger miles to the SF-Chicago train, and vis versa. Not to mention all of the votes they delivered from the Idaho Senators for Amtrak funding, right?
Reliability was an increasng problem even back then... And, unfortunately Uncle Pete's power to screw passenger trains and this "new age" operational mentaility has only gotten much worse with time... So they'll want to extort billions for this, and then UP will still want to run it at least 12 hours late....
Does Senator Crapo propose to add this, and his support, to any infrastructure bill that would be needed to pay for it? And, will the taxpayers and legislature of Idaho will likely come to agreement on paying their part of this? Maybe, but my best guess today would be some time shortly after hell has completely frozen over...?
