As a kid I spent summers near the water tower in Surfside, and the SP Stanton branch ran between the back of my parents' beach cottage and PCH. The occasional freight train would come by, presumably running to or from the LADWP steam plant at the mouth of the San Gabriel River. SP petitioned to abandon the line in 1966 and permission was granted not long after. The wigwag crossing signal at Anderson St. remained for some time after, IIRC.
