For what it's worth, back prior to having to operate under Amtrak insurance, our policy was to couple any required helper, i.e. in "helper districts", ahead of the 4449. Thus, a helper can be quickly added and subsequently removed within the "helper district", and NOT have to uncouple 4449 from the train, with additional train delay. Also, we really didn't care which way the helper diesel/diesels were headed.

Why would he want to, since helpers on the UP, were/are always coupled and MU'ed behind the auxiliary water tanks?
