Growing up in the 70's and 80's, I don't remember BN ever doing much to celebrate the past or throw a bone to the railfan crowd. Only a few things come to mind. In the mid-80's, they sold some VHS tapes honoring rail history. And around 1990 they rebuilt those E-units for the executive train, which was nostalgic. Other than those few things, the BN seemed all business.
I think BN management had kind soured on celebrating the past after decades of griping by union employees on how the BN merged labor forces from the NP, GN, and predecessor roads. When Krebs became head of BNSF, I read he was shocked that some employees were still mad about things that happened during the BN merger 25 years previous. I know the creation of MRL in Montana made a lot of union employees absolutely livid. Maybe that history of employee bitterness is why BNSF won't do "heritage units" to honor the old days? Just a thought.
