Then you're doing it wrong.
I use Firefox with NoScript, Privacy Badger, and DuckDuckGo in addition to the built-in tracking protection (set to either "standard" or "strict"). NoScript blocks scripts from sfchronicle.com, hearstnp.com, blueconic.net, and ensighten.com. polyfill.io is allowed - it's relatively safe. I see all the text, and the lead image. No other images, lots of blank spaces on the screen, but all the text.
If you're using a Chrome-based browser (essentially everything that's not Apple or Firefox), then yes, the paywall bites badly unless you have an effective ad and script blocking extension. Chrome is designed to support that. Pay up.
