Personally, I think high speed rail should only be used in areas that compliment air travel. High speed rail should connect cities that are too close for air travel. My thought is Bakersfield to LA/LAX and Fresno to SFO. This service can also allow people to live in cheaper locations and work in a larger city.

In no way, does it make any actual sense to connect San Francisco with LA when an airplane will beat a train. make high speed rail regional. The initial Bakersfield to Fresno segment is stupid.

Another thought would be to build high speed rail between Colorado Springs and Denver. Most people connect to with a regional airplane. If you take the bus its 2.5 hours direct. High speed rail would eliminate the need for the commuter flight, and its much faster than the bus.
