To my knowledge, crows and ravens are about the smartest non-mammalian species.

A while back I saw a PBS documentary about a "murder" of crows in the Pacific NW, probably Seattle or Portland. Those crows would take nuts up and drop them in the crosswalk for traffic to crack, then wait with pedestrians at the crosswalk for the light to change.

They would modify sticks to use in experiments too. Using tools is a sign of high intelligence, but actually making/modifying tools is on another level entirely.

Then there's all the crow social intelligence--assignment of roles, etc. You don't want just any idiot being the lookout along the interstate at dawn or dusk, eh?
