And I have to agree that the dual-mode locomotives might have attraction for interim use of the HSR valley tracks. Makes an excessive amount of sense. Then they only have to buy a couple of the high-speed trainsets to use for testing, if even that.
I have to wonder about the battery-unit hybrid arrangement, though. So you use a battery unit to get into Penn, but there's some kind of delay and there's not enough power left to get out - in that case you might have to borrow a tow from Metro North to get out to where the diesel can be started. Perhaps adding 3rd rail shoes and/or a pantograph to the battery unit might be useful for recharging. And if they work in NY I could see adding them to other trains - like Cal Amtrak, so they can be both hybrid and dual-mode.
