I was working as a locomotive engineer for the SP at the time. (In the past I had worked as an engineer on the Coast, Western & Los Angeles Divisions.

I had also worked around the horn from the City to Oakland, Oakland to Dunsmuir via Roseville and the eastside to Tehema.

When I went to Dunsmuir I worked the Dunsmuir to K-Falls pool, the Siskiyou Line to Ashland/Medford. K-Falls to Wendel, K-Falls to Bieber and K-Falls to Mowich.

I was qualified Passenger LA to SF via the Coast, Oak to Dunsmuir, Dunsmuir to K-Falls. After I had been in Dunsmuir for 90 days, the RFE qualified me Dunsmuir to K-Falls.

As far as this Bieber thing, that was between the SP & BNSF at the time. My RFE in K-Falls, Maben said I was qualified and told me to go. My RFE in Dunsmuir, Plank, told me the same thing.

Looking back, it was funny. I was qualified between Dunsmuir & Davis via the Cal-P by RFE R.M. Ridgeway, Ray (we had worked together in SLO on a helper, I was his Fireman). And between Ashland and Black Butte by RFE J.W. Ridgeway, Wes, years later. They have both passed, Ray just in the last month or so.

As far as the 49 went, The only place I was a pilot on it was 1 trip SLO to Margarita. The others were Dunsmuir to K-Falls 2 trips, and K- Falls to Dunsmuir 3 trips.

Again, as far as pay went, you would fill out a regular time slip, someone okayed it and it was on your check.
