Would a merger between, say, UP and NS or BNSF and CSX, really be a bad thing? It would create a system that could serve all four corners of the country, and therefore increase efficiency as cars wouldn't have to sit in yards awaiting interchange as much. This, in turn, would really help the railroads in the war with trucks and air freight.
