A friend of mine drives for UP and theft is one of the factors he always talks about in relation to the modern day mega trains. He spent 5 hours in Alameda Corridor last week trying to put away a nearly 4 mile long stack train and as he says, the length of them means they tie up ramps and yards for long periods because they can't be handled on a single track, these delays then force other traffic to be halted, more delays are then created as crews go dead on hours and therefore the opportunities for professional thieves are increased. You have to wonder how much awareness customers have in relation to the increasing lack or security for their goods as the railroads continue to find ways to cut back on employee numbers.
