They did not put out smoke like a coal burning steam locomotive but seemed to me at the time not that much different from an oil-burner.
Traveling on route 30 paralleling the UP overland route July 1960 you could really notice how much smokier the gas turbines were over diesels. Too bad the last UP steam was in Autumn 1959 so I did not have any way to compare. I think the UP might have torqued the fuels they were using on the turbines over the years.
I know Golden Gate Transit tried out kerosene fueled turbines on their first generation ferries in the seventies but quickly gave that up due to very high consumption.
