How many oil deposits in Europe were being actively tapped at that time? In the US by 1960 there was hardly anything left of the vast US electric transit network that hit its peak in 1915. Even trolleybus lines that had supplanted some streetcar lines postwar were being ripped out.

The intensity of the anti-electric(old-fashioned, obsolete, immobile, etc.)campaign eerily reminds me of the braindead fanaticism seen now in the eco-energy transition jihad. It's all bogus: all they want is an unlimited population explosion and concomitant urbanization. Ergo Manhattanization.
