A "battery" is series of cells, a term which was coined by Ben Franklin. In this day and age, "battery" can refer to a single AA cell, six lead-acid cells in series in a car battery, etc. The Tesla batteries are lithin-ion batteries, and if you try to push charge and discharge rates to high, they tend to overheat, sometimes exploding. Several years ago, some new smart phones had the problem as did some jet airliners. The big drawback with lithium is that it reacts explosively on contact with water.
