It isn't politically possible for heavy trucks to pay their fair share. Since the damage to pavement increases as the 4.2 power of the axle weight, that would be one heck of a weight fee. Just as an example lets compare a 4,000 pound car - and yes that's what lots are these days - with an 85,000 pound semi. I will assume an equal weight on each axle. The car has two and the truck five. The car has 2,000 pounds on each axle, the truck has 17,000. So each axle on the truck has 8.5 times the weight the car does.
8.5 4.2 = 8,008
That is the difference in damage per axle, but the truck has two and a half times as many axles. So:
8,008 x 2.5 = 20,020 times the damage of a 4,000 pound car.
We have decided to subsidize trucking. The question is: How much do we want the subsidy to be?
