The PSV can't run, normally, past the Sacramento/El Dorado County Line. With special permission from El Dorado County, it has run trains for special occasions, in the past, as far as Latrobe.

Service on a short portion of the line in eastern Shingle Springs and around El Dorado occurs with speeders, run by the El Dorado Western group (http://museum.edcgov.us/county-history/railroad-history). All track east of Missouri Flat Road is gone, converted to a multi-use trail, and there's strong support for tearing up the rest of it for the same thing (property owners along the line are not amused by the prospect of either a trail or trains...).

The entire SP Placerville Branch east of the main line connection at Brighton was bought by a Joint Powers Authority consisting of Sacramento RT, Sacramento County, Folsom, and El Dorado County. The portion along Folsom Blvd. from Folsom to Brighton currently operates as a light rail line, with freight service from the Hazel light rail station west on a separate track. P&SV has no connection to the outside; it's cut off by light rail at the old wye in Folsom. The El Dorado County portion seems destined, eventually, to become a trail; the part in Folsom and Sacramento County, east of light rail, is still open to debate, and P&SV and the city have done some work to upgrade and maintain it. It's not clear yet who will cover the damage done by land development and other construction east of Hwy 50.

One amusing thing: at the end of the light rail line in Folsom, there's a heavily-constructed, narrow ramp currently used for southbound traffic on Folsom Blvd to access the light rail station and the old town area. The ramp wasn't intended for that. It is heavily built because it was designed as a ramp for extending light rail down onto the American River bridge, then onto Greenback Lane for a loop through the Uncity and Citrus Heights to the end of the current line at Watt/I-80. You can't find that in any current RT plans, but the ramp was built "just in case" and the bridge over the river was reinforced to take the trains. Planning for the far, far future...sort of like CAHSR...and then repurposing it for more short-term benefit. Bridges, after all, are generally designed for a service life of at least 100 years.
