GM has built about 80K Chevy Bolts. About a dozen have burned after charging. All have a usage and charging pattern that maximizes potential degradation of the battery, but a defect in the batteries has been found and GM and LG are now lining up production to replace ALL of them. Hyundai previously did the same thing for about 80K Kona EVs worldwide, after about a dozen fires under similar conditions with LG batteries.

Note the proportions: so far, about a dozen Bolts out of about 80K sold have burned. We don't know how many Konas have burned, except that it's a similarly small number. Unfortunately, the defect can't be easily found without disassembling the battery, so mass replacement is the only option (with, hopefully, cells that have better QC).

LG's taking a hit on this, too. The only ones actually making money on the whole affair are the lawyers as everybody sues everybody else. Maybe Ford and VW are making a smart move by getting their batteries (starting next year) from SK instead of LG?

Tesla, of course, hasn't been innocent of battery fires. After a couple of high-profile ones in China, they were forced to switch to a Li-Iron-Phosphate battery chemistry that's much more stable and longer-lived, but has less energy density and weighs more, so the Chinese Model 3's have slightly less range than their US equivalents.

But with multiple non-EVs burning every day, from various causes, it's mainly the novelty factor, and the greater difficulty of extinguishing a Li-Ion battery fire compared to just burning fuel, that makes battery fires more newsworthy.
