The Volt is an older design, where the battery is up in the center console. It's actually a plugin hybrid, with a fairly small battery. Bolt is all-electric, and the battery is bolted (sorry...) to the underside of the car. Procedure to remove it requires no vehicle disassembly, but the safety procedures are considerable and the lift used to drop it has to be capable of handling more than 1000 lb.
That's for a car battery that holds 60-65kwh. The battery locomotive recently used in the hybrid-consist testing on BNSF had 44mwh (that's mega: 1000 kilo)watt hours. That's on the same scale as the capacity of a battery bank used by an electric utility.
