I told a couple of solar power salesmen who rang my doorbell about 10 years ago exactly the same thing. My electric bill is around $100/mo, and their tilt lights cam on when I said "not ready for prime time" because saving $20/month wouldn't pay off the capital investment until I was something lke 120 years old.
I figure the best way to "go solar" is to use the solar (and battery) power for all lighting and purchase all the compnonents outright, none of these snake-oil salesman, unbreakable bait-and-switch leases these solar companies are so fond of. I'd keep 120v/220v AC for certain appliances. However, this would require completely rewiring my house, the expense of which is even more capital investment for the "energy savings" to pay off.
