In August 1996, an Amtrak IC3 Flexliner running as the "Coastal Cruzer" transported an additional 1,000 fare-paying passengers between San Jose and Santa Cruz.

The Flexliner was composed of six passenger cars and stopped at Aptos and Capitola on its way to the Boardwalk.

At the Boardwalk, passengers were let off and three cars were detached while the rest of the train continued to Wilder Ranch.
