Those lines were a very important part of the SP-DRGW-SSW combined system. It was their "central corridor" linking OR-CA-NV-UT-CO-KS and MO. The merger is what killed those lines, not a lack of business. As soon as UP took over SP and DRGW, that traffic was re-routed via Pocatello, Cheyenne and the Gibbon Cutoff.
Mergers kill specific rail lines and shop complexes. No two ways about it.
