Great stuff

It looks to be all from about 1946-48 with a few shots not on Market and I am not sure what streets they are. One could be 18th Street. The carhouse is obviously one of Market St Ry. origin and I am thinking maybe the one serving Haight St.?

It is not just the streetcars that are lost but that whole era. Just the fact of no tv yet made a big difference in city life.

Just think what could have happened if the City had bought out the URR early on. The entire network would have been upgraded and the routes rationalized. I think the subway measures would have passed without the private car co. opposition and trolley coaches introduced on the really hilly lines much earlier.

For example the #7 Haight with its steep hills could have been converted to tc and the trackage thru GG Park could have been connected to the N. So the N's terminal would have been extended to Playland. Similarly the #16 line trackage on 20th Avenue could have been retained and made a branch of the N. You would have gained a direct connection between the N and L lines in the Sunset, which Jack Wood advocated many years later.

Of course the huge loss was the Mission St. lines. I suggest there were a number of possibilities early on to upgrade the #40 San Mateo interurban to effectively rapid transit light rail. Muni did try some Mission corridor moves; there a bond issue on the ballot in 1917 to extend the J thru the Bernal Cut, but it failed. It finally was brought to fruition many decades later.

But now Muni management seems paralyzed; it cannot even get to the point of discussing trolley coaches on Geary. It should be in that $400mil bond issue.
