Japanese hi-rail bus ... the idea isn't new. See this experiment using LIRR for part of the trip between downtown NYC and JFK: [forgotten-ny.com]

Actually doing this with regular service might be a first, but with the concept being so old I wonder where else it might have been tried, and why it failed (as it did in NY).
