A few memories.

- A conductor notifying the head end the entire train is on the move: "The roots are rocking!"

- The Spreckels transportation manager, Marian Stanley, calling the 24 hour office to ask where her trains were located. If we didn't satisfy, her knew her next call was to Mr. Biaggini, at home.

- One night a Coast crew called in they had a hotbox on one of the ancient beet gons and said that they were only a short distance from a spur track and so were instructed to walk the car over and set it out. Not long after they called to say the journal had failed and the car was derailed tying up the main track. I later saw the car dumped next to the track with its beats spilled out like the guts of an elephant. The nearest spur was miles away.
