It was all set in advance. It meandered around Montana a lot because the emphasis was to explore that state as part of a recognition of its centennial celebration. We stayed off of the east-west ex-Great Northern line because anyone can ride that anytime on Amtrak's Empire Builder.. Too bad the Milwaukee was gone by 1989 west of Miles City, otherwise I'm sure we would have fit it into the itinerary.
