At which point they promptly started persecuting those who adhered to a slightly different version of Christianity. Ever hear of "Rhode Island"? Roger Williams established in it 1636 to escape religious persecution by the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which was C of E with Calvinist overtones.
The reason for the First Amendment is that James Madison was repulsed by the Virginia Colony's imprisoning some of its citizens because they refused to join the C of E, which was the official "state religion" in Virginia at the time.

I've already answered it, but your box of rocks mentality completely missed it. As Lightin' said several times in an Amos and Andy episode, "Shucks, missed it again."
