The California gas tax will rise on July 1 to 53.9 US cents per gallon after an inflation adjustment.
The US federal gas tax is 18.3 US cents per gallon. It is not adjusted for inflation and hasn't changed in over two decades.
This totals 72.2 US cents per gallon. Just to put this in perspective we must note the taxes elsewhere:
All are in US cents per gallon and are tax only.

At the federal level we have to top up the highway fund from the general fund because there is not enough tax coming in from user fees:gas/diesel tax, weight fees, registration fees, etc.
C'est la vie.
