Lots of places on the San Joaquin line weren't in the world's greatest shape when I rode it often in the 1980s-90s. Moving between cars wasn't something you did without thought and a great deal of care. The worst track on the run, though, wasn't (BN)Santa Fe: it was the piece of the Mococco between the connection in Pittsburg and Martinez, where we should have had (and used) seatbelts.
