Here's a photo I took on August 05, 1982, FORTY YEARS AGO, of the Red Unit of the Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey circus train arriving in Santa Ana, CA. A lot of changes since this photo was taken.
(1.) The RBB&B circus no longer exists.
(2.) The Southern Pacific Transportation Company no longer exists.
(3.) Class One railroads, such as the Espee, no longer operate first generation diesels, such as these GP9s.
(4.) The track shown in this photo no longer exists as it was removed for a widening project of the adjacent Interstate 5 and SP negotiated trackage rights over the Santa Fe (later Metrolink) between South Anaheim and Santa Ana.
Espee used to drop off the circus cars containing the live animals on Santa Ana Street in Anaheim, when they had some spur tracks that could accommodate them, and then the rest of the train was brought to Santa Ana. This allowed for the animals to not have to walk as far to the Anaheim Convention Center where the performances were held. In later years some of these details changed when the performances moved to the Honda Center near the 57 Freeway.
