The Thistle (Soldier Summit) relocation involved boring 2 new 1/4 mile long tunnels. The total bypass is about 6 miles in length. Both the D&RGW and U.S. Highway 6 had to be relocated. It took the good old Rio Grande about 4 months to get the line reopened, but the highway wasn't reopened for 8 months. Also some of the landowners that were flooded out of the town of Thistle sued the Rio Grande and the state of Utah claiming that by building the bypasses it made their land worthless, so they should be compensated. The landowners lost this case.
