While we're on the subject of Mexican railroad maps, check out this map a friend of mine made of the region in Michoacan between Caltzontzin (on the left) and Ajuno (on the right). The bright yellow line shows the active 1980s line relocation and its companion line that veers off the bottom of the map as it's heading for Lazaro Cardenas. The faint yellow line (almost greenish) shows the twisted and contorted "old line" that's been abandoned. It was severed when the "new line" was open and they built the new Highway 14D that crosses it near El Carascon. You can see that real twisted section near Jujucato.

This mountainous region ranks right up there with places like Tehachapi or the D&RGW's Craig Branch and was a very difficult place to try and build railroads, as you can see from all the twists and turns. Quite a contrast to the railroads of Kansas!
