OTOH, a bottle with some bitters ... has possibilities.
Train museums, like nearly every nonprofit, seem to attract a few people who like to work on the collection, and some (the number varies) people who like to play politics in a small pond with Other People's Money. That doesn't make train museums bad, and as Bob2 notes (why did I initially misspell as Bot2?) they can be good and even informative (that last a Good Thing if they're 501c3!) places to visit and work at if well run. Yes, they do need to be run like a business (as with all nonprofits and associations of more than 1/2 dozen people), which some aren't. And funny business might be fun and personally (for a while) profitable, but should be avoided. The one museum I've been a member of did, overall, a pretty good job, but I left when 1) I was moving out of the area anyway; and 2) looking at the financial reports and listening to the presentations, it became clear that there was funny business going on that IRS might eventually be interested in. I guess that all worked itself out, because they're still around (having changed names, management, and focus a couple of times over the decades) and providing a good show.
