It was my feeling the White Pass five chimes were tuned and mounted to be especially loud.
Spending a summer in Skagway you could hear the empty ore train all the way to the White Pass an hour after it left Skagway. Heavy snow muffles sound so I'm sure loudness and safety were the major concern. Those chimes carried through the forest like nothing I've heard since the early SD-7/9's on the NWP.
