Ok I admit I initially misunderstood the situation at Chambers Bay in my first reading, partly because a journalist was confused too.
But in the my second reading I see that the engineer was indeed going too fast to stop short of the bridge. Point is, he was speeding.
Sloppy railroading. Pretty damn sloppy.
Is it possible some train engineers are not a good fit for the job? A lot of people these days have short attention spans, and poor concentration, because of how the internet and wireless comms have totally over stimulated modern humans and ruined their ability to focus. Some may just not have the natural talent needed to operate a massive object.
