Happens when the signal system gives the train a green departure signal but the train is not ready to depart -- in other words, there are still people getting on and off.

As soon as the signal goes green, and there is a train in the station, the crossing activates. Then, it's up to the train to accept that signal and to depart.


A lot of this is, of course, highly automated. Much of the dispatching on these high-density lines is done by computer. Although I do not know this for certain, I presume the schedule for trains is fully stored in the dispatching computer. Knowing that there will be a local train making a station stop at a given time, the signal system goes to red for the departure signal. At the scheduled departure time, the signal system then turns the signal green.
