SP in various permutations over the years had a similar practice on Beaumont, depending on train tonnages. Paired GP-9's were my first helper run, on the rear end of the BSMFF, right behind the caboose, which was common back then. And, for the beets and the Kaiser ore gons, lashups of five six axle helpers (sets of six axle 7900's (IIRC?) GE's and EMD's) were cut in ahead of the caboose and mid train.
As Geeps were replaced as helpers with higher HP units, there were a few "incidents" of the higher HP units pushing the caboose off of the tracks, and all helper units were cut in ahead of the cabooose, after that.
Higher adhesion made for smoother starts on grades like Beaumont, under virtually all conditions, which meant the brakemand carrying fewer knuckles.
