Googled and read about the decision to drop the atomic bombs:

One Truman adviser, Secretary of State James Byrnes, pushed hard to use it.

Some possible strategic reasons for using the A-bomb had to do with preventing the Soviets from expanding into the Far East.

Some top American military leaders said use of the bomb was unnecessary and immoral.

Quote by Admiral William Leahy: “Employment of the atomic bomb in war will take us back in cruelty toward noncombatants to the days of Genghis Khan. . . . in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages.”

I like when our military leaders could express contrary opinions back then.
