We never had paid sick leave. If you were sick and laid off, you didn’t get paid. End of story. We also worked our asses off for a good pay check, tying up for short rest hoping to double out for time and a half, booming from job to job or bidding in vacation hold downs to have a few regular days. Very few complained, it was the way things were. Crew consist in the early 80’s really changed things. Pretty much salary capped everyone when Federal rest rules were imposed on the TE&Y crews. It was a great career but nothing lasts forever. Glad to be retired and not part of this mess today.
