True, the big engines were a concern (and sometimes problem) from day one. The tipping point, however, was Dick's passing and a more pragmatic approach to the business by his sons.
The use of Polson 2 this year is essentially an emergency substition made possible by its recent purchase by an ORHF board member, who also has the equipment to transport it by highway. It will depart after Holiday Express this year.
The Shay (not Willamette) is expected to be the long-term solution. Hopefully its transport and 1472 day inspection will go well and it will be ready in time for the 2023 season. Don't expect to see the big engines turn a wheel for some time.
