I remember attending a convention in Germany when I was asked by a rep from The States, "I thought gas was supposed to be expensive here."

You do know that's in liters?

"Oh."

Lots of people think that our federal (not raised in a quarter century) and state gas taxes pay for our roads. Some. Don't forget to add property taxes and income taxes... especially for federal highways.
