The Amtrak service from Oakland to Bakersfield started in 1974 with one round trip per day. The second round trip started in 1981. The third round trip started in 1990 and the plan at that time was that it would be extended from Bakersfield to Barstow as through cars to train #4 and from train #3. At the time, SP had approved this extension as did Santa Fe, but Amtrak and Caltrans could not come together about the cost of the extension. This is why they numbered it train 703 and 704. I lost track after that as to when the fourth round trip started. One round trip from Bakersfield to Sacramento started in early 1999 after Santa Fe Stockton Interlocking Tower was closed.
